Invisalign® is an orthodontic treatment for adults who want to bypass metal or ceramic braces and align their teeth without visible signs of braces. The Invisalign® treatment consists of a series of clear plastic aligners, custom-made for every individual patient and that resemble night guards. Over time, these aligners slowly shift the teeth into the proper position. Invisalign® may also be recommended for ongoing use by patients who have completed orthodontic treatment to help maintain results until teeth are settled down and finished moving.
The Invisalign® aligner trays are replaced every two weeks. Each new aligner adjusts your teeth one step closer to the proper position, gradually shifting the teeth into proper alignment. If, after a reasonable time, Invisalign® treatment does not achieve proper alignment, our specialists may recommend regular braces to complete the treatment. In some cases, Invisalign® is recommended for patients who have completed treatment with traditional braces to complete and optimize the results.
The length of Invisalign® treatment varies from patient to patient, but generally, takes longer than traditional braces. For most adults, treatment lasts an average of two to three years.
Treatment with Invisalign® may produce mild soreness in the jaw and gums for a day after each initial fitting. Still, this treatment typically produces less discomfort than treatment with traditional metal or ceramic braces.
Although Invisalign® is suitable for most patients, it may not be optimal for everyone. In some patients, Invisalign® may not provide enough force or pressure to achieve a successful alignment, and regular braces may be recommended.
